What is the best, most comprehensive medicare supplemental insurance fo someone on disability under 65?
Sandi Dover asked:
My spouse is covered by the current private policy, but I am primary. We both were only able to access coverage due to HIPPA and ERISA while I applied for my disability. I am concerned that he not be dropped if I switch to a medicare supplemental policy. All personal experience or advice appreciated.

The insurance is determined by the primary. As a secondary on your policy he would be dropped if you drop coverage for yourself. You can get a supplemental policy in addition to what you have now.

First off, if you drop your current private policy your spouse will not be able to keep it. You can look into finding a policy for him but if he has major health concerns that might be difficult.
Next, if you keep your private policy so he can be covered it will be secondary to Medicare for you.
Also, depending upon what state you live in finding a Medicare Supplement policy for someone under 65 is very difficult. There are Medicare Advantage plans available for under 65 for most people on Medicare. If you need to keep your current policy for your spouse you can still get the Medicare Advantage plan. This plan will then become your primary coverage with your current policy as secondary. Many of these plans have a $0 premium so it’s likely this will be the best way for you to go.
You’ll want to visit a local independent agent that also deals with senior policies because this is too confusing to fully explain here. The agent can work with you to find a policy for your spouse and also to find a Medicare Advantage plan for you. The plans and premiums are exactly the same if you use an agent or if you don’t but the agent can find the best plans for your situation.
