How do people get medicare when they are not old?

Im not talking Medicaid but Medicare. I work in a medical field and see people with Medicare who are not old, and seem to be pretty dang healthy. I am curious how they do this? I thought it was only for senior citizens.

An actual disability is beyond me because most of them make up their symptoms in order to receive monthly check and pain meds its ridiculous.

My ex husband he is 26 got medicare after he is 26 got medicare after he fell 40 feet at work and broke his back.
