Am I exempted from the Medicare and social security taxes?
Al asked:
As an international graduate student (F1 visa) receiving a research assistantship, I realized that no medicare or social security taxes were deducted from my W-2, and I think I am exempted.
My summer employer deducted these and asked me to check if I am exempted or not. Should I just assume that I am exempted from paying these because of my previous W-2?
Thanks for the help.

There are 2 narrow exceptions for fica/mc.
On-campus job. No fica/mc is withheld if you are a full-time student (this applies to US citizens as well).
Authorized OPT/CPT. This exemption only applies if the work is approved by ICE, the school and you are still in your first 5 years of the F-1 visa.

No, you should not assume that you and your summer employer is not required to pay Social Security and Medicare. If this is a job not connected with your school, it is not exempt.
